After cruising into the finals with fastest time of the three heats, Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot ran away with the men’s 1500m gold at the ongoing World Athletics U20 championships that is being held in Cali, Colombia.

Cheruiyot who ran a tactical race was too hot to handle after taking control of the race at the 150m mark and forging ahead with a lightning speed to gift Kenya its gold medal in a time of 3:35.83.

Daniel Kimaiyo who won the heat one with the second fastest in the qualifying finished in third to bag a bronze medal for Kenya, behind Ethiopia’s Ermias Girma who took silver after posting 3:37.24.

Cheruiyot, the fastest U20 man 1500m runner in the world this year trains in Nyahururu, Laikipia County under Jacob Lang’at, hanged in the leading pack and when Kimaiyo slowed down, he took charge in the final lap and led all the way to the finishing line.

Kimaiyo on his part trains in Kapsabet, Nandi County under the watchful eye of the former 800m champion Janeth Jepkosgei.

This was an improvement from last year’s performance where Kenya bagged gold medal through Vincent Keter.
