Dispatch of ballot materials underway amid tight security

It’s the election eve and various constituency tallying centres across the country remain a beehive of activities amid tight security as ballot materials get dispatched to respective polling stations.

In the general election set for Tuesday August 9, 2022, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to conduct the polls in 46,233 polling station which have been gazetted.

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) staff in all the 290 constituencies have reported that the IEBC returning officers in respective constituencies have embarked on dispatch of voting materials to various polling stations

Among materials whose dispatch are underway include ballot papers, ballot boxes, pens, lights and KIEMS kits which voters will use to elect president, governors, senators, members of parliament, woman representative and members of county assembly.

In Narok North Constituency, dispatch of electoral materials was conducted under strict supervision from IEBC officials, media, independent observers and security agencies.

Same level of preparedness has also been witnessed in Nakuru Town West where distribution of materials is expected to commence from 11AM Monday.

Smooth distribution was similarly witnessed in Eldama Ravine to remote parts of Laisamis and Kilifi County where the dispatch centre was restricted to unauthorized persons.

“Security is tight at the KP Senior Secondary School in Mtwapa which is the Kilifi South Constituency tallying centre. No one is being allowed access into the centre until 10AM when the returning officer Jumaa Musa Jumaa will kick start the dispatch of electoral materials to various polling stations in the constituency,” reported Asha Khamisi who is the KBC reporter covering the region.

Similar level of preparedness was also witnessed in Moyale Constituency which borders Ethiopia where distribution of voting materials was underway to seven polling stations which have a total of 66,402 registered voters.

In Tala Girs which is the tallying centre for Matungu Constituency, Sahara Ibrahim confirmed that all materials had arrived and are ready for dispatch to polling stations.

In the newly gazette polling centres such as Nyamasaria Primary School for Kisumu East Constituency, no much activities were reported though the distribution of materials is expected to take place from 12PM according to the returning officer.

While dispatch of electoral materials begun as early as 9 AM, some tallying centres are however expected to begin the exercise from 2 PM as some returning officers were yet to arrive.

While so far no major incidences have been reported on the process, KBC Digital will keep you posted on factual reports as they happen.
